QBO Monday Minute: New QuickBooks Online Navigation View

QuickBooks Online’s navigation menu soon will be enhanced with a phased rollout beginning in early August and continuing through the end of 2022.

Michelle Long, CPA, taught us how to make Bookmarks for QuickBooks Online screens. I still teach this method to all new users for easy navigation. Her tip seems to have caught on, and now the new Business View navigation panel includes a bookmarking feature.

With this new rollout, bookmarks and customizations also will be available in the Accountant View soon.

Overview of Business Navigation

Creating the new Business View is intended to assist company owners by providing wording more likely to be used.

If you have added a new client after October 2021 and determined them to be a business owner or employee, they already have the new left navigation, but even existing clients will see a simplified navigation menu at the end of 2022.

Customization features include the ability to:

  • Modify the navigation menu to see only the pages they use most
  • Hide the pages they don’t use (and find them again under More)
  • Bookmark a page
  • Reorder the navigation menu items and bookmarks

The original navigation bar, called Accountant View, will remain unchanged. The new features will be added to it.

You will need some time to get used to this new view. Toggling between views is super simple.

Switching Views

As I talked to my dear friend Ann Lee, CPA, the other day, she told me that Michelle also shared during the * “Scaling New Heights” conference how to toggle between Business and Accountant Views depending on your needs or preference.

One reason it is handy to toggle between views is accessing the Chart of Accounts’ prior experience. The ability to edit or add new accounts with full landscape screen space allows total visibility.

The navigation steps are slightly different depending on which view you choose to access and edit the Chart of Accounts.

Accountant View for Editing the Chart of Accounts

  • Navigation
  • Chart of Accounts
  • Use the drop-down next to the account you want to edit

Business View for Editing the Chart of Accounts

  • Navigation
  • Bookkeeping
  • Chart of Accounts
  • Use the drop-down next to the account you want to edit

While I am rather fond of Accountant View, I can see the benefits of using Business View, especially when new to QuickBooks Online.

Check out this video to see how easy it is to toggle between views, create Navigation Bookmarks and edit the Chart of Accounts.
